When one traditionally pictures a nursing home, the thought of sterile hospital hallways and fluorescent lighting comes to mind. However, more retirement living communities are showing that this image is out of date.


SmartMoney.com recently took a look at some of the most luxurious senior living homes in the country and found beautiful, expansive areas offering five-star chefs, dog-walkers and 24-hour concierges.


Saddlebrooke Ranch in Oracle, Arizona, offers residents an 18-hole golf course with five tee options, as well as a full-service spa.

The Regency at Monroe, New Jersey, has a 40,000 square-foot clubhouse that includes a fitness center. Recently, the community has started construction on a tennis pavilion that will include six different courts when completed.


For a more natural touch, many residents are turning to the sustainable community of Trilogy at Redmond Ridge, which is 20 miles outside Seattle. This eco-friendly residence is built from sustainable wood that gives a rustic appearance to the facility.


As the baby boomer population ages, many may look into retirement homes as a way to enjoy their golden years. The National Clearinghouse for Long-Term Care Information estimates that up to 70 percent of boomers will require long-term services, according to TCPalm.com.
