Residences at Merrillville Lakes, which is an independent-living community aimed at to individuals aged 55 and older, has recently opened one of the four apartment buildings onsite to renters, according to the Post-Tribune.com.

Perks of the retirement living community include attached garages, so that seniors don't have to go outside in bad weather, and an outdoor swimming pool which is still under construction, the news source reports.

"Seniors deserve all the security they can get…They cannot be secure enough," Carol Miano, director of Senior Services for Merrillville, told the news source.

When all four buildings are ready for occupancy, there will be 356 living units. And, happily, residents can keep their pets with them as long as they're less than 25 pounds.

According to HelpGuide.org, seniors who are interested in living at a retirement living community are often encouraged to participate in community events such as group meals and planned activities.
