Staying ahead of the Wii Learning Curve

Video games allow people to venture into a world fueled by the imagination. A virtual reality can be a lot of fun whether you’re a child, middle aged professional or older adult! Play a video game and you can be almost anything — a race car driver, a web slinging super hero, a soccer star or a tennis mogul. The possibilities are limitless. In today’s digital society, video games are one of the most popular forms of escapism, which we all need from time to time :)

Nintendo Wii - The New Normal in Assisted Living

It’s universal for assisted living centers and retirement communities to host video game events in their weekly activities calendars. The game console of choice is Nintendo Wii due to the social flavor of the gaming experience. The controls are simple and easy for new players to enjoy on their first try in an enticing assortment of games, including golf, bowling, boxing, and fishing.

Wii was the first mainstream video game console to use motion sensors primarily to control the gameplay. With motion sensory, Wii players control the games with physical movements. While holding a wireless controller, players’ motions are tracked by an infrared sensor, setting off actions in real time within the video game.

The Intuitive, Natural Feel of Wii

The learning curve is short to play video games on Wii, because the physical motions to control the games are designed to be intuitive and natural. When a couple of old time sluggers in Wii's homerun derby swing the wireless controller, the virtual player on the screen swings in unison. Players can stand close or far away because the accuracy of the motion sensory is remarkable as is the range of the wireless controller. The console is inclusive and accessible for seniors to get familiar with the basic motions of Wii games within minutes.

There are two important points to consider when setting up a Nintendo Wii event:

Have extra batteries on-hand for the wireless controllers to ensure no one is left out if power runs out.

Place the infrared sensor that detects the motion of the wireless controller at an adequate height. For players who are sitting, the sensor may need to be positioned lower so the motion is detected properly.

Wii encourages everyone to participate in physical activities that form relationships and a sense of community. Residents can play against each other or as teammates head-to-head on the Internet against other retirement communities to promote good old fashion, healthy competition! Just remember what Tom Hanks said in A League of Their Own, “There’s no crying in baseball!” :)

Tags:

Entertainment and Hobbies

management

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Gadget Reviews

Hardware Reviews

Hobbies

Learning and Technology

Management

Marketing

Sales

Senior Living Professionals

Bridging the Generation Gap for Jewish Seniors

Isolation is a key problem for frail, older adults and can reduce their lives into enduring in lonely apartments. Mobility issues or economic problems force millions indoors.

DOROT, a Hebrew word for "generations" is a microcosm of volunteers determined to close the gap. The non-profit organization reaches upwards of 7,000 seniors in Manhattan’s Upper West Side and bordering Westchester County.

It's teleconference service, University Without Walls, enrolls seniors into an exploration of visual arts, music, literature, health, support groups, Judaic studies, and games.

Memories are shared, new skills are practiced, and health is enhanced from the comfort of one’s home. Because the service is available country-wide, University Without Walls, is global. Classes are limited to 15 people for heightened learning purposes.

Volunteer Force Relieves Isolation

Judith Turner – Director of Volunteer Services of DOROT – said that the organization’s mission is to relieve isolation of seniors. Because its services are highly individualized, DOROT maintains a 6,000-strong volunteer force.

Although most of the seniors, volunteers and staff are Jewish, DOROT is open to all denominations. Every senior receives a home session by a staff social worker who develops a personal portfolio. In-home needs and interests are defined for proper response from volunteers.

According to Turner, “the heart and soul of DOROT is our friendly visiting program.” Many volunteers pay weekly visits to older adults for up to a year and most volunteer-senior relationships last for 2.5 years on average. “We’re really about bringing relationships into the home.”

Computer Learning Reduces Isolation

A DOROT specialty is familiarizing isolated adults with computers. Volunteers commit to up to four continuous visits to help with the basic needs of the elderly, including accessing the Internet, setting up Skype, and playing computer chess.

Older adults are assisted with writing memoirs and organizing computer files. “Photography and organizing photo albums are very important to older adults,” said Turner, “and communicating through e-mail.”

Volunteers help seniors get started with audio books, iPod shuffles and iPads. “We even had a 107-year-old man buy his first iPad and get assistance,” Turner giggled.

DOROT was founded in 1976 by Columbia University Graduate students and alumni who sought to help out home bound seniors isolated in their apartments in the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Tags:

Entertainment and Hobbies

older persons

seniors

Categories:

Health and Wellness

Inspiring stories

Learning and Technology

Online Learning

Guitar-slinging Snowbirds Fly South for the Winter

The trees have been stripped bare. The cold wind rushes into your face like a freight train. Canadian winter is on its way and the snowbirds are flying south. Florida is the main destination with over three-million visitors.

Grant MacNeill – Owner of The Twelfth Fret – a guitar and stringed-instrument emporium since 1977 – has served the musical needs of snowbirds for many years. “I have 2,500 of them in my database,” he said in an interview.

Many of his clients will be carrying acoustic guitars and sheet music, ready to jam with fellow retirees. MacNeill believes that older adults are learning musical instruments as an artistic pursuit, to socialize, and keep their minds sharp.

Folk and Rock Music Infuse the Florida Retirement Scene

“At 55, they have more time,” he said. "The kids are out of the house and they have a few hours every day to learn and play an instrument.” The guitar is the top choice for a generation raised on folk and rock.

MacNeill admits that music was poorly taught to Boomers in the 60s and 70s. The community of players was small and there weren't a lot of teachers. Theory predominated – and many teachers insisted on learning to read music – a lot of students were impatient.

“Now, teachers have grown up in the rock, blues and folk era. They are more results-oriented, which older people thrive on.” Aging adults learn to play songs from day one. At more advanced levels, they choose to learn theory.

In the Boomer Era, the challenge was to find learning material and a teacher. Now, online classes and YouTube make learning accessible. “Pick a simple tune and there are 30 to 40 people who can show how to play it on the Internet," said MacNeill. Late bloomers are pleasantly surprised at the ease of their progress.

Snowbird Jamborees Fill the Florida Air

Middle-aged and older adults can pick up 10 to 15 sing-a-long songs and play in Florida for several hours a week with friends. Music jams are popular in the Florida retirement scene, said MacNeill. “There are 3 or more jams a week,” said the vintage music store owner. “They have a blast!”

Many retired snowbird musicians play 7 days a week in Florida, for the enjoyment. Organizations can’t afford professional musicians, so volunteer musicians are in demand.

Louis Gulyas, a Toronto-based guitar instructor, said many retired people wanted to play a musical instrument, but feel ready when they get older.

“The aging process means slower process,” said Gulyas. “It takes more time and effort. But there’s more free time, so it evens out.” Like MacNeill, he realizes the most popular instrument for aging adults is the guitar. It’s inexpensive and portable with plenty of songs from blues, folk and rock.

The retirement scene in Florida promises to be filled with the joyful guitar tones of Canadian snowbirds.

Tags:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies

Octogenarian Finds his Niche with Online Fine Art Marketing

Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art – Andy Warhol

If the 20th Century artist had lived to see the coming of the Internet Age he might have branded his website with this quote.

Peter Worsley, an 84-year-old painter from Santa Barbara, CA, has adopted a brand of his own – I paint ordinary people, doing everyday things, at interesting places.

After working 50 years in aerospace and computer marketing, Worsley retired in 1996. Now, a painter, he displays his fine art on a website he created by mastering Dreamweaver.

He advises 21st century professional artists to market their artwork by paying special attention to branding. “It’s the ideal way to rise above the thousands of other artists. A website is indispensable.”

Worsley has found his niche. He opposes traditional Madison Avenue mass marketing as a ‘push’ medium. “Today, inbound marketing is the key.”

He understands the process. His website captures visitor information; he follows up with e-mails in search of potential purchases for his paintings. “Successful artists need to spend a third of their time marketing to maintain their client base; two-thirds of their time spent creating” – the elder artist’s formula for success.

In 2011, the National Endowment for the Arts identified 2.1 million artists in the United States. With so many artists seeking work, these statistics are an incentive to promote online.

After retirement, Worsley wanted to pursue another profession. He discovered he had a talent for painting and meticulously studied under other artists.

He always has been entrepreneurial and has developed a popular newsletter that is automatically distributed to Twitter and on his Facebook newsfeed.

His affinity for social media is heighted by his use of Pinterest. Women are about five times as likely to be on the site as men, the largest difference in gender of any site featured in the PewInternet report The Demographics of Social Media Users – 2012.

“Females are not identified as collectors of art,” Worsley states, “but they are big influencers of art collectors.” He ensures his art work is well-represented on Pinterest and claims success at having his art re-pinned along with their descriptors and links.

The indefatigable artist/marketer knows that it’s never too late to set another goal. He intends to write an e-book on how artists can market themselves in the 21st century.

How Older Adults reconnect with music's spotlight

In late June, 2013, 77-year-old Helga Beier will perform a 20-minute recital at the Theatersaal of the University in Bremen, Germany.

Her piano playing was brought to a standstill during World War II while in her 20s. Germany was at war and people couldn't make long-term plans.

A half a century later, she rediscovered the instrument, exactly realizing the repertoire she wanted to practice and perform.

Retirement freed her from financial and family pressures, providing her with time to reunite with the piano.

Unexpectedly, she turned away her attention from the traditional classical repertoire – Mozart or Beethoven – and focused on contemporary classical music like Kurtag, Boulez, Cage or Schoenberg.

"Not precisely mainstream," says her teacher Juan María Solare.

“It was a difficult choice for her, finding a teacher who loves and understands experimental avant-garde music," says Solare, a Buenos Aires-born pianist and composer who has lived in Germany since 1993.

Helga had listened to hours of classical and pop music but she needed to experiment with something new.

Another student of Solare, Markus Deinhard, a 50-Plus pediatrician, will also perform in the recital at the Theatersall. He has played piano as a hobby since youth and approached Solare to overcome his time constraints.

The physician practices music after working hours, integrating it in his life as a non-professional. His challenge is to attain the right notes and give shape to music through performance and interpretation.

"He wants to understand how the piece was composed,” Solare says.

The 20 minute recitals before a small audience provide an adequate challenge. "More than 20 minutes would be too much pressure, playing less wouldn't be enough."

The return to a musical instrument is a pay-back for a debt to themselves, a fulfilment of the need to positively reconnect with their past. Intrinsic motivation is the key for older adults returning to music. They’re uninterested in becoming professionals.

Despite years or decades, they recognize they haven't lost their musical skills. Complacency is the obstacle. They've retained their aptitude, but still need to make a rigorous sacrifice to attain a higher stage. The reward is to accept the test and pass with flying colors.

"My art as a teacher is to sense what I can do to require the personal best from each student, neither over nor falling too short.”

"This is bliss! They can create music without second thoughts," Solare says. "They're not worried about selling songs or undermining the joy of making music.”

For Helga and Markus, public concerts give their musical efforts an external, visible goal, as they do for Solare's younger piano pupils. Annual recitals before a small audience – usually fewer than 50 people – are concrete indicators of improvement.

They have rediscovered the joys of performing live music with the help of a capable teacher.

Tags:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Health and Wellness

Hobbies

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Health and Wellness

Hobbies

Inspiring stories

Why Blogging is so great for Older People

Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter –
Mark Twain

Ronni Bennett is the proprietor of Time Goes By, the highest-ranked elder blogging site on the Internet. The transplanted New Yorker lives in Lake Oswego, OR, where she produces her popular aging site.

“Blogging is a terrific medium for all kinds of reasons," says the prolific 72-year-old. She provides a six-point list to demonstrate why blogging is a perfect pastime for older people.

1. It helps overcome the unstructured and potentially isolated lifestyle of retired people.

2. When people leave the workplace they can be left without its daily camaraderie. Blogging can create a new circle of friends.

3. It can ease the aging process as family and friends move away or die.

4. It is a made-to-order home pastime when mobility issues set in. Email and Skype between older bloggers relieve isolation.

5. Blogging forces you to think.

6. It helps older people to focus. Political-minded writers will read the daily newspaper.

Bennett lived in New York City, making the rounds as a television network producer for 35 years with 20/20, The Barbara Walters Specials and other shows at NBC, PBS, CBS, and Lifetime. In 1995, she was hired on as the managing editor of CBSNews.com’s first website.

She was struck that she was the eldest person in the room by decades. “They were all 20-somethings and I was 55."

For nearly a decade she spent all her personal time researching aging, passionately reading books, magazines, scholarly articles and the news. Eventually, she needed a personal platform. A blog presented the opportunity to collect her material and go public.

Time Goes By was launched in 2003. The response was surprisingly positive. Since then, she has blogged every day. Her contributions range from hard-hitting news, to in-depth aging topics or humorous pieces. A community has built up as her blog has become popular.

Her blog roll is reserved for over 50-years-olds, a list to blog links that Bennett endorses. She links to 300 elder blog sites on Time Goes By and she alludes to thousands of bloggers from the 50 plus demographic who write on aging-related topics.

“I’m not tired of it. You never know everything there is to know about aging." Her posts go out every day to subscribers and are posted on Facebook and Twitter.

"I am not unique. If a topic interests me or affects me, I write about it," she says. "Thousands of others have asked the same questions, undergone the same life changes.”

Time goes by and Ronni Bennett is still running strong as the Internet's most prolific elder blogger.

Tags:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Gadget Reviews

Hobbies

Learning and Technology

Six Ways to live to 102 and stay happy

The last surviving member of the Stanford class of 1933, Dr. Ephraim Engleman, is turning 102 in a few weeks. There are many interesting accomplishments to his credit.

He still works part-time as director of the Rosalind Russell Medical Research Center for Arthritis and has no intentions of retiring. As a younger man he was an accomplished violinist and continues to play regularly. The gracefully aging resident of San Mateo, California lives with his wife Jean, who is 97. They have three children and six grandchildren.

Here are his secrets to healthy and happy longevity:

1. Keep working past the traditional retirement age.

If people retire, they need to keep mentally and physically active by acquiring a new hobby or pastime.

2. Avoid falls at all costs.

Older people tend to lose balance and falls can be very serious. They can cause serious fractures for the elderly and result in unforeseen effects for the heart and on blood pressure.

3. Accomplish career goals. It can lead to a lifetime of satisfaction.

Dr. Engleman became a leader in rheumatology including president of the American College of Rheumatology, and president of the International League Against Rheumatism, which is in about 40 countries.

4. Turn failure into success.

After being turned down for a residency in San Francisco, Dr. Engleman found another job in pathology, studying cancer patients which led to a position at UCSF.

5. Persevere through physical problems.

Dr. Engleman admits that older people will confront medical problems . For him – a ruptured appendix – a minor cardiac problem. He told Huffington Post that his greatest misfortune was carpal tunnel syndrome which is related to his ability to play the violin or piano. "The result has been a disaster. I've lost all sensitivity in most of the hand. So it makes it difficult to bow," he said.

Although the results are depressing and restrict his ability as a violinist, Dr. Engleman still plays. "My colleagues know the problem and they tolerate me."

6. Marriage is bliss.

Dr. Engleman has been married to Jean for 72 years, and considers her his biggest inspiration. His advice is simple: "Pick the right companion."

Tags:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Health and Wellness

Categories:

Health and Wellness

Health Guide

Healthy Living

Inspiring stories

Many people retire into an unstructured environment, complaining that it's a life of 'four walls' with nothing to do. The Huffington Post's Next Avenue Column, a feature for 50+ readers seeking second careers, begged to differ. A recent article featured three fun, part-time and lucrative post-retirement careers.

1. Voiceover Professional

Voiceover work is an acting area where age can work in an older person's favor. There's plenty of opportunities to ply one's trade:

. Training videos to audio books to TV commercials. The big bucks are in Los Angeles and New York but corporations, nonprofits and small businesses offer opportunities practically anywhere.

. Work can be done from home studios with personal computers and low-cost recording equipment.

. Aspirants will need to refine their skills and educate themselves before giving it a shot. After learning the ropes a 55+ second career seeker could earn $100 per session or up to $1,000 for a national TV commercial.

. Movies represent the zenith of voiceover work but go to those with the most experience. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) in Los Angeles guarantees the highest
pay. Check your local SAG office.Continuing education programs are a good starting point.

2. Life-cycle celebrant

The Next Avenue Column admits it's a new field that many don't know about, but it's a growth business. Life-cycle celebrants helps people commemorate important life moments:

. a wedding
. a divorce
. an adoption
. a loss of a beloved pet
. etc

The life-cycle celebrant works with clients to craft highly personalized ceremonies reflecting clients' values, heritage, beliefs and religious customs. With inter-ethnic and interfaith marriages are on the rise, couples need to hold meaningful ceremonies beyond traditional religious institutions.

Life-cycle celebrants can earn from a $100 to $1,000 depending on the extent of the ceremony.

3. Senior move manager

Moving is one of the most stressful activities in people's lives, especially for the elderly. Senior move managers help out through this tough transition, helping clients with the process of decluttering, downsizing and relocating.

Maturity and experience works in the favor of becoming a senior move manager. The National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) - based in suburban Chicago, IL - reports that three-quarters of its members are 50 or older. Elderly people who need help moving take comfort in having an older person help them.

The job entails:

. Organizing household belongings
. Disposing and arranging for the sale of items
. Packing and unpacking boxes
. Planning the client’s new home space and assistance with decorating.

Senior move managers can also help the elderly 'age in place', streamlining their possessions and organizing their space. Pay can be hourly or by the project - $25 for hourly services - negotiated fees per project. Senior move managers often work with assisted living facilities and senior residence communities.

National Association of Senior Move Managers is a great starting spot. It has established many local chapters outside of its Chicago headquarters.

Tags:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies

retirement living

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies

Now, the 78-years-old has picked up the horn and has renewed his love for it.

He was inspired watching the news on television two years ago when he saw trumpeters playing taps. He learned the memorial tune: “It was the same 24 notes it had always been,” he told The News Tribune.

Brittan feels it's his way to support the troops so he plays it every day with the exception of winter when his horn becomes too cold. He is touched when neighbours stop, stand at attention, and salute.

Last fall, CBS sent a camera crew from New York to create a two-minute feature about Brittain and the retiree's fame soared throughout the state of Washington. Brittain received letters from the troops in Afghanistan, and from across the USA. “It was flattering, and humbling,” he said.

After 34 years of marriage, the return to playing has helped him cope with his wife Jan's death to cancer. “It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever been through, but I was with her when she died,” Brittain told The News Tribune. The trumpet and close friends kept him busy.

That was 2011. Alone in their home, Brittain kept playing his trumpet. Friends encouraged him. He loves playing the blues, Dixieland, jazz, ballads, big band stuff, and is looking forward to to playing in a community band. There’s a senior's band in Tacoma looking for a third horn, and Brittain plans to test his mettle and join.

Brittain practices up to an hour a day in anticipation of his audition. He can still hit high C. He warms up with “My Funny Valentine,” and “Satin Doll.” Then, he plays the familiar haunting notes of Taps.

Tags:

active living

Entertainment and Hobbies

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies

Cooking Class Add Spice to Older Woman's Life

In the USA and Canada, the constantly available food source can work against people's health. Diets can become glutted with too much sustenance. This state of affairs is particularly true for people who arrive from developing nations where their food consumption is far less.

North Americans can borrow from New Zealand where programs have been constructed to relieve this problem. The Press from Christchurch, NZ, reported about the troubles of a Zimbabwean immigrant who gained a lot of weigh upon her arrival to her wealthier environs.

"The food we ate in Zimbabwe was different. You just ate what was there to keep you going," Cyciliah Muchirahondo told The Press. The 65-year-old was referred to the local district health board's Senior Chef program, a course of eight classes for elderly people.

The classes provided instructions on nutrition, breakfast ideas, cooking on a budget, meal planning, shopping tips and healthy desserts. It also provided Muchirahondo a much-needed opportunity to make new friends. "It changed my life," she said. Best of all, She has lost over 11 pounds and intends to shed another 11. Her classes focused on meal plans and the importance of eating breakfast, which Muchirahondo used to skip.

Older people are at high risk of poor nutrition. The body changes. Appetites can change, and they can lose taste because of medications. Many elderly people need to adapt to cooking for one, including men who never cooked for themselves and women who cooked for a family.

Project nutritionist Katy Keogh told The Press: "It's to help them improve their cooking and nutrition for one person, especially people who are newly widowed and who may have never had to cook for themselves before." She reported that those who completed the program were now eating more healthily, were socializing more and had more confidence when it came to cooking

Many Assisted Living and Continuing Care residences offer recreational cooking classes.

Tags:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies
