Gardening Safely with the Elderly

Gardening is a highly enjoyable pastime. Fresh air, sunshine, easy exercise, and the act of bringing forth a mouth-watering array of fruits and vegetables, or stunning display of flowers, and plants, brings a satisfaction that can’t be matched. Many people whose mobility has been compromised by illness, stroke, vision impairment or fragile bones, hang up their gardening gloves, resorting to store-bought tomatoes. Before you throw in the trowel, examine some of the ways you can garden safely and avoid pain and injury.

Easy-Care

Stay away from slopes and uneven ground. Make sure you have a safe and wide path to your garden, and only walk on level ground. Carry a walking stick, or footed cane, even if you’re ambulatory. An ounce of prevention, as the saying goes, is worth a pound of cure.

Bending and reaching can be difficult for some older folks. Balance issues may arise if you’re working out in the sun, or have a hard time staying hydrated. Raised beds are a wonderful solution. Besides the landscape advantages of raised gardens, you no longer need to risk a hip fracture while keeping weeds at bay.

There are many garden tools and accessories that make maintaining your garden a breeze. It’s not necessary to spend hours pulling weeds. There are tools available designed to fit between rows and dislodge those pesky invading garden weeds. Take advantage of them.

Avoiding Injury

Use a stool or chair to avoid bending or squatting and aggravating your joints. Keep a bench and bottle of water nearby for hydration breaks. Take things slow.

Don’t climb on ladders, stools, or any make-shift risers when gardening. It’s easy to lose your balance, at any age, but especially if you’re balance, or gravity center is effected by medication. Many medications common for chronic conditions cause dizziness, and dehydration.

Lightweight clothing that covers your arms and legs is a wise choice for all who garden. Stinging and biting bugs can take the fun out of your day real quick. Also, eye protection and a sunhat are also a good idea. Don’t forget sunblock on exposed areas.

Opt to work in the yard early in the day. The early bird gets the worm-and the cool morning air. Take advantage before the sun is too intense.

Have a Partner

Planting and maintaining a garden can be great therapy, both physically and mentally. But, before you tackle the job of planting, weeding, fertilizing or harvesting, make sure your caregiver knows of your intentions. If you tire easily, or falling is a risk, never garden alone. Having someone with you also gives you an opportunity to pass along your gardening tips, secrets, and wisdom.

Garden Like a Champ

There’s no reason, with a little forethought and planning on your part, you can’t continue to enjoy gardening. Woo your favorite gal with a lovely homegrown bouquet, or best your buddy with a blue-ribbon beefsteak. There are still plenty of gardening days ahead.

Tags:

gardening

Hobbies

hobby

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies

The best creative activities for seniors

When it comes to caring for the elderly, there are some obvious things that come to mind, and physical health is foremost among them. Given the prevalence of medical conditions relating to the body among the elderly, concerns about broken bones, strokes, and so forth are all vital aspects of care. However, one thing that can sometimes sadly be overlooked is the mental component of elderly care.

Why We Should Care About The Mind

There are a number of reasons to give higher priority to the mental considerations of caring for the elderly. None of us would be happy with a life devoid of distractions and entertainment, of course, but even better than that is active creative work. This is vital not only for ensuring the personal wellbeing of residents in terms of happiness, but can also serve as a crucial part of recovery from an incident such as a stroke, and as a useful tool to help slow the progression of maladies such as Alzheimer's Disease.

Creative activity can best be thought of as doing for the mind what physical activity does for the body - it helps to keep the mind sharp and engaged. Whilst this can be brought about in other, more passive ways, being engaged in the act of creating is more powerful because it engages more of the brain, including parts that otherwise might not always be put to use in daily life. In psychological terms, being creative also helps provide a sense of both usefulness and satisfaction, and it has been said by philosophers since ancient times that the best life is one where people are healthily challenged by creative work.

Types Of Creative Work The Elderly Can Perform

There is a tremendous variety of creative work that a person can engage in, but sometimes the elderly are more limited due to physical or mental conditions in what they can achieve. Here are some of the creative activities the elderly are often able to perform and benefit from, as well as notes on where difficulties may arise;

Painting can be a wonderful hobby that engages the mind, but it can also be made difficult by conditions which affect the arms or hands, such as a palsy.

Pottery can similarly be a great way to combine mental and physical activity, but it does require a measure of physical endurance that some elderly people may lack.

Writing is another superb way to engage the mind. In some cases, dictation could be preferred instead of writing or typing.

Creating music is a wonderful way to express creativity, as music itself can have beneficial uses as well. In addition it may be possible to engage other residents who play, or are learning to play, instruments.

There are also a wide array of crafting activities that can be undertaken, ranging from cross-stitching to woodwork to origami.

Whether individually or in groups, and whatever degree of physical activity the work involves, creative activities for the elderly should form a core component of their care. Providing both mental stimulation and emotional satisfaction, it cannot go overlooked.

Tags:

entertainment

Hobbies

Categories:

Brain Health

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies

Seniors and pets: A doggone good idea, or a hairy mess?

Obviously, there are a variety of benefits animals have when placed with an elderly care taker. They don’t have to worry about finding a safe and warm place to sleep at night, there is always plenty of food around, and constant companionship makes them feel loved and secure. It just so happens that there are also many benefits that seniors can take advantage of when paired with an animal companion. Here are just a few:

Health Benefits

One of the biggest health benefits for elderly people who own pets is that their blood pressure stays lower than those who don't have a furry friend to live with. Many seniors even find that they need fewer doctor visits throughout the year. Pets also keep the elderly active, which results in better health overall. The extra activity helps to maintain lean muscle tissue which in turn helps to prevent broken bones and strained muscles while performing every day activities.

Mental Benefits

Depression is a problem that plaques the elderly because of isolation and feelings of inadequacy. But pets know how to ease those symptoms on a grand scale. Most seniors who live with an animal companion report feeling much more at ease, secure, and happy compared to when they lived alone.

They take pride in being able to care not only for themselves, but they can care for their beloved furry family member too. Those with pets also tend to have more self esteem and take better care of themselves. Many seniors find that their pets help them to get over a loved one, and they feel less lonely while living alone.

Social Benefits

Socialization is extremely important for the overall health of any person, especially those who are older in age. Seniors who have pets spend more time with friends, and enjoy showing their pets off so having company tends to be experienced more often. Pets become the confidant to their senior owners, so that correspondence with other people does not always have to center around problem solving.

Overall, any pet offers health, mental, and social benefits to the elderly. However, it is important that the right pet is matched up with each person because they all have different care needs. Those who have a hard time caring for themselves or getting around will have a more rewarding experience with cats or fish than with dogs. Seniors who still exercise and do all their chores personally may be better suited with a dog that likes the outdoors.

Tags:

elderly

health

pets

seniors

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies

5 Reasons Why Seniors Should Utilize Senior Centers

Senior centers usually rank near the top of most-widely used services among America's aging adults. According to recent statistics, approximately 11,000 senior citizens cater to over one million senior citizens who frequent those senior centers every year.

Get Connected and Engaged

For those of you who may not know, a senior center is a place that older adults congregate for social, emotional or physical reasons. Many senior centers around the country cater to older adults' need to feel connected to each other.

Senior centers normally host an array of free activities. These include complimentary dance classes and group walking tours of the city as well as discussions of wide-ranging topics from politics to local sports.

Hub for Aging Services

According to the recent US Census, there are over 40 million American senior citizens, which is more people aged 65 or older than in any other time in US history. Over the last decade, in fact, the sheer number of baby boomers skyrocketed by nearly a fifth.

This trend is slated to continue as baby boomers continue to collect social security as senior citizens. Aging baby boomers are also expected to flock in greater numbers to senior centers, which are considered the epicenter for a community's senior services.

Informational Seminars and Communal Meals

Informational seminars and communal meals are daily events that senior centers host to attract and inform seniors of all of the aging services that their community offers.

Seniors can find out the top recreational activities from staff and other experts at these informational seminars and communal meals. At the very least, these get-togethers are a great change of pace and opportunity to connect with one's peers.

Be Part of the National Aging Network

The Older Americans Act, passed by President Johnson in 1965, helps to create and sustain what is known as the national aging network in the United States. This helps to fund initiatives like senior centers across the country.

Although most senior centers are funded by the communities in which they operate, some senior centers receive state money or funds from the federal government.

Social Benefits

On a more practical note, going through the national aging network and getting involved in your community's local senior center can have lasting social benefits. That is, some older adults transition from barely caring about socializing to feeling lonely as, maybe, a spouse passes or family comes around less often. Other times physical disabilities prevent getting proper exercise without some assistance.

Fortunately, senior centers can help many seniors to connect with their peers. Moreover, senior centers often offer bingo and potluck dinners to keep seniors' minds occupied and their spirits high. These kinds of recreational activities have the added benefit of keeping seniors feeling in control of their lives and autonomous.

Increased Independence

Seniors are meant to feel more independent when they have a schedule chock full of activities and friends to do those activities with. Older adults who regularly attend events at senior centers report a greater sense of autonomy, enjoyment and gratitude.

Because some older adults, especially those with disabilities, can feel like a burden on their families, senior centers offer a viable alternative for seniors looking to spend their remaining years having a good time with their peers. Fortunately, most senior centers provide complimentary transportation to and from the senior center to ensure that the good times last!

Medical Check-ups

Many senior centers feature health screenings and flu shots to older adults. These health screenings are a great way to spot diseases early and ensure longevity.

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies

A guide to gardening for seniors

As the number of seniors in the United States passes the 40 million mark, or a full 14 percent of the total US population, many older Americans are wondering how they can stay fit and healthy through their golden years.

Low-Impact and Relaxing

Increasing numbers of seniors actually view gardening as a great way to burn off calories and get their daily dose of sunshine. Gardening is a low-impact activity that often is a more palatable alternative to costly gym memberships or trudging along a treadmill.

Listening to the birds chirp as you dig into the soil can also be very relaxing. Moving from one position to another while gardening can also help improve bone density and enhance flexibility for seniors. Seniors should focus on a range of low-impact maneuvers while gardening; these might include:

-Stretching beforehand

-Lifting shovels or light bags of soil

-Occasionally kneeling

-Digging up weeds and walking

Great Calorie Burn

Research shows that just going through these rudimentary gardening tasks - from walking down the lawn with your mower to actually tilling and hoeing the soil - can burn between 200 and 400 calories! Best of all, this can all be done on your schedule and with occasional breaks.

Although the benefits of gardening can include a low-impact workout that burns more calories than even an hour's quick walk around the neighborhood, seniors are well-advised to take frequent breaks if they feel fatigued or if the outdoor temperature is in excess of 80 degrees.

Reap What You Sow

It's been said that seniors who spend more time gardening are more apt to eat their own nutritious produce. That is, if you work on planting and growing tomatoes and carrots, you may well eat more of those yummy fruits and vegetables. Who would have thought!?

Horticultural Therapy for Seniors

There's even a growing movement today in nursing homes and some drug rehabilitation centers that focuses on what's called horticultural therapy.

Horticultural therapy is usually conducted in conjunction with a trained therapist and a set of health and wellness goals in mind. The American Horticultural Therapy Organization says that horticultural therapy can have therapeutic benefits like increased happiness, lowered stress levels and higher wellness scores.

From actually planting the seeds to reaping the harvest, a doctor or psychologist trained in the tenets of horticultural therapy works with the senior to improve the senior's quality of life and tangible health outcomes, such as lowered blood pressure.

The Great Outdoors

At this juncture, the exact reasons behind horticultural therapy and increased wellness for seniors taking up gardening are not completely understood. Some speculate that increased time in the sun and higher amounts of Vitamin D are associated with lower rates of depression in seniors and higher wellness ratings.

Other speculate that simply getting in more hours outdoors communing with nature and digging into the soil rejuvenates the soul. Or as the poet Henry David Thoreau put it: "I believe there is a subtle magnetism in Nature, which, if we unconsciously yield to it, will direct us aright."

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies

Staying ahead of the Wii Learning Curve

Video games allow people to venture into a world fueled by the imagination. A virtual reality can be a lot of fun whether you’re a child, middle aged professional or older adult! Play a video game and you can be almost anything — a race car driver, a web slinging super hero, a soccer star or a tennis mogul. The possibilities are limitless. In today’s digital society, video games are one of the most popular forms of escapism, which we all need from time to time :)

Nintendo Wii - The New Normal in Assisted Living

It’s universal for assisted living centers and retirement communities to host video game events in their weekly activities calendars. The game console of choice is Nintendo Wii due to the social flavor of the gaming experience. The controls are simple and easy for new players to enjoy on their first try in an enticing assortment of games, including golf, bowling, boxing, and fishing.

Wii was the first mainstream video game console to use motion sensors primarily to control the gameplay. With motion sensory, Wii players control the games with physical movements. While holding a wireless controller, players’ motions are tracked by an infrared sensor, setting off actions in real time within the video game.

The Intuitive, Natural Feel of Wii

The learning curve is short to play video games on Wii, because the physical motions to control the games are designed to be intuitive and natural. When a couple of old time sluggers in Wii's homerun derby swing the wireless controller, the virtual player on the screen swings in unison. Players can stand close or far away because the accuracy of the motion sensory is remarkable as is the range of the wireless controller. The console is inclusive and accessible for seniors to get familiar with the basic motions of Wii games within minutes.

There are two important points to consider when setting up a Nintendo Wii event:

Have extra batteries on-hand for the wireless controllers to ensure no one is left out if power runs out.

Place the infrared sensor that detects the motion of the wireless controller at an adequate height. For players who are sitting, the sensor may need to be positioned lower so the motion is detected properly.

Wii encourages everyone to participate in physical activities that form relationships and a sense of community. Residents can play against each other or as teammates head-to-head on the Internet against other retirement communities to promote good old fashion, healthy competition! Just remember what Tom Hanks said in A League of Their Own, “There’s no crying in baseball!” :)

Tags:

Entertainment and Hobbies

management

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Gadget Reviews

Hardware Reviews

Hobbies

Learning and Technology

Management

Marketing

Sales

Senior Living Professionals

Guitar-slinging Snowbirds Fly South for the Winter

The trees have been stripped bare. The cold wind rushes into your face like a freight train. Canadian winter is on its way and the snowbirds are flying south. Florida is the main destination with over three-million visitors.

Grant MacNeill – Owner of The Twelfth Fret – a guitar and stringed-instrument emporium since 1977 – has served the musical needs of snowbirds for many years. “I have 2,500 of them in my database,” he said in an interview.

Many of his clients will be carrying acoustic guitars and sheet music, ready to jam with fellow retirees. MacNeill believes that older adults are learning musical instruments as an artistic pursuit, to socialize, and keep their minds sharp.

Folk and Rock Music Infuse the Florida Retirement Scene

“At 55, they have more time,” he said. "The kids are out of the house and they have a few hours every day to learn and play an instrument.” The guitar is the top choice for a generation raised on folk and rock.

MacNeill admits that music was poorly taught to Boomers in the 60s and 70s. The community of players was small and there weren't a lot of teachers. Theory predominated – and many teachers insisted on learning to read music – a lot of students were impatient.

“Now, teachers have grown up in the rock, blues and folk era. They are more results-oriented, which older people thrive on.” Aging adults learn to play songs from day one. At more advanced levels, they choose to learn theory.

In the Boomer Era, the challenge was to find learning material and a teacher. Now, online classes and YouTube make learning accessible. “Pick a simple tune and there are 30 to 40 people who can show how to play it on the Internet," said MacNeill. Late bloomers are pleasantly surprised at the ease of their progress.

Snowbird Jamborees Fill the Florida Air

Middle-aged and older adults can pick up 10 to 15 sing-a-long songs and play in Florida for several hours a week with friends. Music jams are popular in the Florida retirement scene, said MacNeill. “There are 3 or more jams a week,” said the vintage music store owner. “They have a blast!”

Many retired snowbird musicians play 7 days a week in Florida, for the enjoyment. Organizations can’t afford professional musicians, so volunteer musicians are in demand.

Louis Gulyas, a Toronto-based guitar instructor, said many retired people wanted to play a musical instrument, but feel ready when they get older.

“The aging process means slower process,” said Gulyas. “It takes more time and effort. But there’s more free time, so it evens out.” Like MacNeill, he realizes the most popular instrument for aging adults is the guitar. It’s inexpensive and portable with plenty of songs from blues, folk and rock.

The retirement scene in Florida promises to be filled with the joyful guitar tones of Canadian snowbirds.

Tags:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies

Octogenarian Finds his Niche with Online Fine Art Marketing

Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art – Andy Warhol

If the 20th Century artist had lived to see the coming of the Internet Age he might have branded his website with this quote.

Peter Worsley, an 84-year-old painter from Santa Barbara, CA, has adopted a brand of his own – I paint ordinary people, doing everyday things, at interesting places.

After working 50 years in aerospace and computer marketing, Worsley retired in 1996. Now, a painter, he displays his fine art on a website he created by mastering Dreamweaver.

He advises 21st century professional artists to market their artwork by paying special attention to branding. “It’s the ideal way to rise above the thousands of other artists. A website is indispensable.”

Worsley has found his niche. He opposes traditional Madison Avenue mass marketing as a ‘push’ medium. “Today, inbound marketing is the key.”

He understands the process. His website captures visitor information; he follows up with e-mails in search of potential purchases for his paintings. “Successful artists need to spend a third of their time marketing to maintain their client base; two-thirds of their time spent creating” – the elder artist’s formula for success.

In 2011, the National Endowment for the Arts identified 2.1 million artists in the United States. With so many artists seeking work, these statistics are an incentive to promote online.

After retirement, Worsley wanted to pursue another profession. He discovered he had a talent for painting and meticulously studied under other artists.

He always has been entrepreneurial and has developed a popular newsletter that is automatically distributed to Twitter and on his Facebook newsfeed.

His affinity for social media is heighted by his use of Pinterest. Women are about five times as likely to be on the site as men, the largest difference in gender of any site featured in the PewInternet report The Demographics of Social Media Users – 2012.

“Females are not identified as collectors of art,” Worsley states, “but they are big influencers of art collectors.” He ensures his art work is well-represented on Pinterest and claims success at having his art re-pinned along with their descriptors and links.

The indefatigable artist/marketer knows that it’s never too late to set another goal. He intends to write an e-book on how artists can market themselves in the 21st century.

Recipe: Easy Cinnamon Twists

This is one of our family's new dessert favorites. Perfect for the upcoming Canada Day and Independence Day long weekends.

All you need is a 12 ounce package of ready-made biscuits (we used Grands Jr), granulated sugar, butter, cinnamon, powdered sugar and water!

Ready? Here we go.

Preheat oven to 400 F.

Prepare cookie sheets or baking pan with non stick cooking spray. We use baking stones that are non-stick.

Place the biscuits a few inches apart and flatten them with the palm of your hand until each one is about 4 inches in diameter.

Place a pat of softened butter on each round and spread with a spoon.

Mix 1/3 cup granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon together then sprinkle evenly over all the biscuit rounds.

Cut each biscuit in half. Put the buttered and cinnamon sides together (so it's like a sandwich). Then twist a couple times and tuck the ends under.

Sprinkle any extra cinnamon sugar on top.

Bake for 10-12 minutes.

While that's baking, mix 1/2 cup powdered sugar with a small amount of water and/or milk in a small bowl.

After the cinnamon twists have cooled a bit, spoon drizzle the sugar topping over them. Serve warm.

Tags:

baking

cooking

food

recipe

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Hobbies

How Older Adults reconnect with music's spotlight

In late June, 2013, 77-year-old Helga Beier will perform a 20-minute recital at the Theatersaal of the University in Bremen, Germany.

Her piano playing was brought to a standstill during World War II while in her 20s. Germany was at war and people couldn't make long-term plans.

A half a century later, she rediscovered the instrument, exactly realizing the repertoire she wanted to practice and perform.

Retirement freed her from financial and family pressures, providing her with time to reunite with the piano.

Unexpectedly, she turned away her attention from the traditional classical repertoire – Mozart or Beethoven – and focused on contemporary classical music like Kurtag, Boulez, Cage or Schoenberg.

"Not precisely mainstream," says her teacher Juan María Solare.

“It was a difficult choice for her, finding a teacher who loves and understands experimental avant-garde music," says Solare, a Buenos Aires-born pianist and composer who has lived in Germany since 1993.

Helga had listened to hours of classical and pop music but she needed to experiment with something new.

Another student of Solare, Markus Deinhard, a 50-Plus pediatrician, will also perform in the recital at the Theatersall. He has played piano as a hobby since youth and approached Solare to overcome his time constraints.

The physician practices music after working hours, integrating it in his life as a non-professional. His challenge is to attain the right notes and give shape to music through performance and interpretation.

"He wants to understand how the piece was composed,” Solare says.

The 20 minute recitals before a small audience provide an adequate challenge. "More than 20 minutes would be too much pressure, playing less wouldn't be enough."

The return to a musical instrument is a pay-back for a debt to themselves, a fulfilment of the need to positively reconnect with their past. Intrinsic motivation is the key for older adults returning to music. They’re uninterested in becoming professionals.

Despite years or decades, they recognize they haven't lost their musical skills. Complacency is the obstacle. They've retained their aptitude, but still need to make a rigorous sacrifice to attain a higher stage. The reward is to accept the test and pass with flying colors.

"My art as a teacher is to sense what I can do to require the personal best from each student, neither over nor falling too short.”

"This is bliss! They can create music without second thoughts," Solare says. "They're not worried about selling songs or undermining the joy of making music.”

For Helga and Markus, public concerts give their musical efforts an external, visible goal, as they do for Solare's younger piano pupils. Annual recitals before a small audience – usually fewer than 50 people – are concrete indicators of improvement.

They have rediscovered the joys of performing live music with the help of a capable teacher.

Tags:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Health and Wellness

Hobbies

Categories:

Entertainment and Hobbies

Health and Wellness

Hobbies

Inspiring stories
