The Most Important Reasons to Stay Healthy Before You Get Old

The latest research report shows that the key to having a healthy life when we get older, begins during middle-age. Women and men who lead healthy lifestyles in their 50s will reduce chronic illness in their elderly years.

CTV News reported on the findings of the Archives of Internal Medicine. The study from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center determined that mid-life fitness reduced the chance of protracting eight chronic diseases:

  1. Heart disease
  2. Congestive heart failure
  3. Type 2 diabetes
  4. COPD
  5. Kidney disease
  6. Alzheimer's disease
  7. Lung cancer
  8. Colon cancer

Mid-life fitness does more than delay the inevitability of aging, it lowers the onset of chronic disease in life's final years. Positive effects of fitness are maintained till life's end. Fit men and women tend to live their final five years of life with fewer chronic diseases.

The study also stated that healthy eating complemented fitness as an agent against chronic diseases.

Naturally, mid-age obesity, alcohol use and smoking increased the incidence of chronic disease in old age.

Assisted Living and Continuing Care residences maintain healthy activities for their residents.
