British seniors looking for a different kind of retirement home

North America’s population is aging, and more retirement communities and assisted living communities are being built to accommodate this expanding demographic, but it’s not just North America which is seeing a burgeoning senior living industry: Europe is catching up.

As reported in a recent article in the Guardian newspaper, not only are more retirement communities in England being constructed, but different types of senior housing options are being built, as well.

Some of the new offerings include luxury senior condominiums and apartments available for purchase (starting at the equivalent of more than a million dollars), and featuring movie theatres, leisure and health facilities, a professional concierge service, as well as specialized nursing care for those who need it.

Senior living communities in England also market to different audiences, many of whom have different visions of retirement living than North Americans. So instead of creating retirement communities beside golf courses and near lakes and ponds, many English builders have created facilities catering to shared interests, proximity to local towns, as well as quality of care offered.

“I do go out and do my shopping,” one retirement home resident, Judi Gerrard, told the news source. “but I've no desire to get away from here. This place has changed my life.”
